Description
Our guide-astronomer will be waiting for you 30 minutes before sunset at the meeting point, or, if you have hired our transport service, we will pick you up at your accommodation and we will gotogether to the Teide National Park.
We start the activity by walking to a viewpoint from where we can observe the sunset, the magnificent landscapes of the sunset on the Teide and over a large part of the island of Tenerife. The contrast of blue, green, white, ochre and red colours worthy of a painter's palette, the wide panoramic bird's eye view of the sea, the forest, the lava field and volcanoes, the pure mountain air and the peaceful silence of the place will make us enjoy the experience from the beginning.
We carry out the activity in an area of easy accessibility and clear skies which is usually above the sea of clouds. The mountainous relief of our island, which is over 2,000 metres high, and the particular climatic conditions of the Canary Islands are the two factors that allow us to have enviable sky visibility conditions, among the most stable in the world throughout the year. This is also why numerous astronomical telescopes have been installed on the summits of Tenerife at the Teide Observatory and why numerous astronomical and scientific expeditions have searched the skies of Tenerife over the last two centuries. As it gets darker, we will tell you some of these stories, you will discover the quality of the sky of Tenerife and you will become aware of the importance of having the Law of the Sky, which allows the natural values of this environment to be preserved for our enjoyment.
At sunset, the first star of the night has disappeared, but soon thousands of small lights will be lit up in the sky, and we will be able to spot them as we stand in a suitable place to observe the sky.
The aim of our astronomer-guide in this experience is for you to discover, with the naked eye, what celestial objects can be seen in the night sky, to learn to orient yourself, to know how the sky and all those bright spots move and to be able to recognise each one of them. Then you will be able to understand what is happening in the sky every night, wherever you look in the world. Next time, maybe it will be from where you usually observe the sky, you will be able to identify for yourself the ones you have learned about this night.
To make the observation easier, we will use an astronomical laser pointer, which our guide will use to point out stars, planets, satellites, constellations and the Milky Way. We may be lucky enough to see a shooting star, or our observation may coincide with a star shower. You will also learn how to adjust and use astronomical binoculars, which are much easier for a beginner to use than a telescope, and with which you will be able to see some nebulae, galaxies, double stars, star clusters and the Moon.
We will try to connect with what you already know, surprise you with many things you didn't know about our night sky and our astronomical neighbourhood, demystify possible beliefs that we sometimes take as true, and give you a close, entertaining and informative experience. We are sure that you have many concerns, doubts and questions about some of those bright points you usually see when you look at the sky, and about what happens up there. Our guide will help you answer many of them, and we encourage you to ask anything you don't know or aren't sure about.
We will also dedicate time to bring to life the many constellations, stories, legends and mythologies that the sky tells us, some of which are closely linked to the Canary Islands, such as the Dragon.
Finally, we make you one night photo with starry sky as a reminder of your participation in the Stargazing on Teide. If you have hired our transport, we will take you back to your accommodation.

For this excursion it is necessary:

Be in good general health, not suffer from cardiorespiratory or other problems incompatible withan activity at an altitude of 2,000 metres.

Low
In order to define the general difficulty of the activity (being aware that it may differ for eachperson according to their particular conditions), we have established 10 parameters and a risk
scale with 5 levels. In addition, we indicate what actions we take to prevent these risks and giveyou some tips and recommendations with which you can help us in prevention.

Effort: low
We will walk a few minutes to see the sunset from a viewpoint where it is best seen. The path is short, it has a slight climb, but at 2,000 meters above sea level there is less oxygen and any effort is noticeable a little more.
Prevention: Our guide will set a calm pace to the viewpoint. It is also possible to skip the walk to the viewpoint.
Fatigue: low
The walk to the viewpoint is short, so the fatigue should not be a problem. Later on, the observation does not imply any exercises.
Prevention: It is possible to skip the walk to the viewpoint to reduce fatigue to a minimum.
Vertigo: bajo
Only people with a very high sensitivity to vertigo could suffer from vertigo from the viewpoint.
Prevention: If you suffer from vertigo, the best idea is not to walk to the viewpoint.
Claustrophobia: nil
The activity takes place outdoors in open spaces. There are no enclosed spaces where you might feel claustrophobic.
Prevention: None.
Altitude sickness: low
Although we will be at an altitude of about 2,000 metres, altitude sickness is very rare.
Prevention: Make the ascent in a vehicle slowly, driving smoothly and stopping along the way to acclimatise to the altitude. Drink regularly to maintain hydration. In severe cases, end the activity and descend immediately.
Falls: low
The only difficulty of the terrain is the path to and from the viewpoint, which could be slippery on the way down. The rest of the activity is done standing still in the same place, albeit at night and in the dark.
Prevention: Carry a torch so that you can shine it when necessary. A torch with a red light mode is ideal for astronomy because it does not dazzle when used while observing the sky. Our guide carries a first aid kit to provide the necessary first aid in case of a fall.
Insolation: low
The activity takes place during sunset and at night.
Prevention: You can wear sunglasses to watch the sunset.
Cold: high
Since the activity takes place at an altitude of 2,000 metres, when the sun sets, temperatures drop considerably, especially in the winter months. In winter the temperature is usually 5-10ºC, while in summer it is usually 10-15ºC.
Prevention: It is important to wear enough warm layers to keep you warm and comfortable throughout the activity. Thick-soled shoes and thick socks to insulate you from the ground. We also recommend wearing gloves, a hat and scarf. You can bring a blanket to wrap yourself in, a mat to lie on the ground and a hot drink.
Be prepared for the cold. It is better to take a spare coat than to feel cold. You can leave in the vehicle the things you don't need.
Rain: low
It doesn't usually rain in this place.
Prevention: In case of rain, the activity will be cancelled.
Wind: medium
On some days it may be windy. The presence of wind can increase the thermal sensation of cold and dehydration.
Prevention: We recommend wearing a good windbreaker and an extra coat. It is important to protect the neck and the ears. We will stay in a place that is as sheltered from the wind as possible.

What do you need to bring?
The temperature contrast between day and night after sunset, and also due to the altitude, can be very significant. At night, it is often cold and windy in the Teide National Park, at an altitude of 2,000 metres. In addition, depending on the season, you will need more layers, especially in winter. In summer, the warm temperatures on the coast should not make you think that it will be hot at 2,000 metres above sea level and at night. To enjoy your hike, the most important thing is to protect yourself from the cold and wind by wrapping your body in several layers of warm clothing.
Coat: Thermal T-shirt, warm and windproof coat. Thermal trousers and long trousers. Gloves, hat and scarf. Thick socks and closed mountain, hiking or sports shoes with thick soles.
Drink: It is very important to stay hydrated during the excursion to feel well, especially considering the dry weather conditions in the Teide National Park. The ideal woul be to bring a thermos with water (so that it retains its temperature and does not get cold) or a hot drink such as tea, coffee or chocolate.
Food: You can bring something to eat if you haven't had lunch or dinner before the excursion or in case you might be hungry. We recommend that you take the opportunity to have a snack while watching the sunset. It will be a special picnic!
Hand cream and lip balm: Since humidity is usually low, lips and hands dry out quickly, so we recommend that you bring a lip balm and hand cream.
Sunglasses: You can wear sunglasses if you need to protect your eyesight during the sunset.
Torch: If you need light during the activity. Remember that red light torches are special for astronomy, as they avoid dazzling during the observation.
Waste bag: To avoid leaving traces of your passage and to help keep Teide National Park clean, put your waste in a bag that you can throw away in a waste bin. In the National Park and on the island you will find litter bins and waste separation containers. If you are not sure whether any of the waste you generate is recyclable, ask us and we will tell you.
Mat for lying on the ground or a blanket to cover you are good options to be more comfortable and insulated from the cold.
Astronomical binoculars (we recommend 7x50 or higher) and Photo camera (we recommend SLR type with tripod): If you have any of these objects, we encourage you to take them with you. You will be able to enjoy the night doing some astrophotography.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Temperatures at an altitude of 2,000 metres are lower and colder than on the coast, even in Tenerife. Although the relative humidity is usually quite low and the climate is dry, when it is windy, the sensation of cold increases.
Remember to wear closed shoes with good soles, thick socks, warm long trousers and several layers of warm clothing. Gloves, hat and scarf are recommended in winter, and even in summer for a greater sense of comfort. If you are hesitant to take too much or too little, we recommend you take as much as you have. If you don't use it, it's OK, you can leave it in the transport. If you wear too little, you may not feel comfortable and may not enjoy the activity.
A blanket or mat to lie on to insulate yourself from the cold ground and look up at the sky is also a good idea.
One last tip! If you have hand cream and lip balm, take them with you, the air is often dry and you will notice that your lips and hands dry out. Usig them will protect you.
No. This activity is designed for beginners who want to get to know the sky with the naked eye and start to learn more about the use of astronomical binoculars. To have a telescope during the activity, book our Stargazing with Telescope experience or customize the excursion indicating what you would like your experience to be.
No. During the excursion we will be in nature and there will be no toilet facilities. Therefore, in case you need to go to the toilet, it will be necessary to use nature, avoiding leaving any kind of waste. We recommend that you bring tissues and a rubbish bag so that you can dispose of used tissues and any other waste in it and then throw it away in the rubbish bins that we will find in the car park next to the transport or on the way back in an urban area.
Remember that we will be in a National Park and our actions contribute to its preservation. It is important that we keep it clean!
No. You can have dinner before the activity (in summer) or after the activity (in winter), or bring a picnic to eat while you watch the sunset. If you want us to take care of your picnic, let us know when making your reservation, as well as any other need you may have. In private excursions we can organize dinner during the activity, just ask us.
No. The route does not include a visit to the Teide Observatory because the astrophysicists work at night and it is not possible to visit the facilities while they are working. However, during the day it is possible to make a visit and we can organise it if you are interested, combining it with the sky observation experience, just ask us and we will customise your excursion.
